Former Tennessee Vols assistant coach lands offensive coordinator job

Former Tennessee Vols offensive line coach Will Friend has a new job.

After spending last season at Mississippi State as the Bulldogs’ offensive line coach, Friend has landed a gig as the offensive coordinator at Western Kentucky according to Football Scoop .

Tyson Helton, who served as Tennessee’s offensive coordinator in 2018, has been Western Kentucky’s head coach since 2019. Helton is 40-26 through five seasons at Western Kentucky and he’s led the Hilltoppers to five straight bowl games (with four bowl game wins).

Friend and Helton were on staff together at Tennessee in 2018 (Friend was at UT from 2018 to 2020).

This won’t be Friend’s first time in an offensive coordinator role. Prior to his time at Tennessee, Friend was the offensive coordinator at Colorado State for three seasons (2015 to 2017).

After the 2020 season, Friend left Tennessee for South Carolina, weeks before Jeremy Pruitt was fired by the Vols. Friend was at South Carolina for less than two weeks before joining Auburn’s staff under then head coach Bryan Harsin.
