Two people died in a car accident on Saturday night at the intersection of Woodland and S. 1st Streets. The accident happened at 8:40 p.m. when a speeding BMW sedan ran a red light and hit an Infiniti Crossover SUV. The BMW driver and a passenger in the Infiniti died in the accident.
The incident started when a police officer tried to stop the BMW for a traffic violation near 1st Avenue South and Gay Street downtown. The BMW initially stopped but then sped off. The officer chose not to chase the car. Soon after, the accident happened. A stationary camera showed that the Infiniti was waiting at a red light at the intersection of Woodland Street and South 1st Street. When the light turned green for the Infiniti and red for the BMW, the BMW ran the light and hit the Infiniti.
The collision caused the Infiniti to roll over and the BMW to hit a light pole and a fire hydrant. Investigators found cognac and marijuana near the BMW, indicating the BMW driver may have been impaired.
The BMW driver, a 31-year-old man from Bowling Green, Kentucky, died in the accident. His family is being notified. The BMW had four other passengers, three of whom were injured and taken to a hospital. The deceased Infiniti passenger was 21-year-old Kyla Green from Nashville. The driver and two other passengers in the Infiniti were also injured and taken to a hospital.
