Nashville-area could see damaging winds, heavy rain early Wednesday. What to know about tornado threat

The National Weather Service is warning of a marginal risk of severe storms and possibly a tornado throughout the Middle Tennessee Area.

Storms are expected to develop between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m. Wednesday, with the strongest storms capable of damaging wind gusts and perhaps a tornado, said National Weather Service Meteorologist Ryan Husted.

Although tornado chances are low they cannot be ruled out, wrote the weather service.

“We see probably 40-50 days with probabilities like this a year in Middle Tennessee,” said Husted in an email to the Tennessean. “In addition, some of these storms should produce some heavy rain, particularly north of Interstate 40 and west of Interstate 65 north west of Nashville.”

Since those areas have received a few rounds of heavy rain over the past four days, there is possibly a threat of some flooding, added Husted.

A flood watch may need to be issued for the northwest, should rain fall in already saturated areas wrote the weather service.
