This giving season, as we reflect on the ripple effect of generosity, I am reminded of my own journey and how the support of one person helped shape the trajectory of my life and led me to my current role as executive director of Teach For America Nashville-Chattanooga .
My family’s story is one of perseverance. I am the grandson of Mexican migrant field workers who labored across America, from Texas to Florida and Michigan, in pursuit of the American Dream. My grandfather eventually secured employment at the Heinz Pickle Factory in Holland, Michigan, which allowed him to buy a home and lay the foundation for our family to thrive.
My parents worked tirelessly to provide for our large family − I’m the eldest of nine siblings − but it wasn’t just their hard work that enabled me to succeed. It was a mentor, Mary Carrizales, at my local Boys and Girls Club, who stepped in to help me navigate a world my parents knew little about. Mary connected me to resources and opportunities I never imagined. S
