NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — One Nashville transportation project has been given federal funding, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
In an announcement Tuesday, the FHWA announced $44.5 million in grant awards for communities in 13 states and Puerto Rico through the Active Transportation Infrastructure Improvement Investment Program (ATIIP). The ATIIP was authorized through the bipartisan infrastructure plan and is meant to plan, design and construct pedestrian and cyclist safety projects.

East Nashville Spokes was one of those projects, awarded nearly $9.4 million for construction. The goal of East Nashville Spokes is to address mobility barriers in East Nashville with a focus on bikeways and other multimodal transportation improvements.
Metro will receive the funding to continue the project, which has been underway since spring 2023. The project aims to connect downtown Nashville with the East Bank development and provide connection options across Interstate 24 and the Cumberland River. Design plans for the project include raised medians and dedicated bicycle lanes along Woodland Street, green pavement markings, shortened crosswalks and more.
