MTSU professor indicted for theft and misconduct in financial scandal

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — A Middle Tennessee State University Professor has been indicted following a TBI and Tennessee Comptroller’s Office joint investigation into the misappropriation of university funds and donations.

A probe into the suspect, Professor Don Hong, centered around Hong’s involvement in MTSU’s Actuarial Science Program, scrutinizing financial transactions from January 2020 through February 2025.

After an internal audit by MTSU, multiple questionable transactions were discovered. Investigators claim that Professor Hong misappropriated at least $8,225.48 in donations to the university. Hong had encouraged students to donate to support the Actuarial Science Program, but these funds were diverted to his bank account instead of being deposited into university-managed funds, according to the TBI.

Although Hong later remitted some donations to the university, he failed to turn over at least $8,225.48. After the investigation, Hong gave an additional $11,700 to the university…
