At the request of 20th Judicial District Attorney General Glenn Funk, TBI special agents continue to investigate the circumstances of a fatal officer-involved shooting Monday morning involving the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.
Preliminary information indicates the incident occurred at approximately 8:45 at the intersection of Hermitage Avenue and Lea Avenue, where an officer was dispatched to a call regarding a distraught man carrying a firearm. The officer arrived and gave multiple commands to the man, but he did not respond. The situation escalated when the man charged the officer with his gun pointed at him, after which the officer fired at the man, striking him. Medics transported the man to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. No law enforcement officers were hurt in the incident.
TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration. The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.
