Lutherans File Legal Challenge Against TN Anti-Immigrant Law

Evangelical Lutheran Church of America seeks to protect religious freedom

The Southern Christian Coalition is applauding a legal challenge to a new Tennessee law that criminalizes churches that provide shelter or assistance to undocumented immigrants.

In a video statement released to the media, a pastor affiliated with the advocacy group explained their position.

“I am deeply grateful that my denomination has taken this courageous stand by filing suit against Tennessee’s discriminatory law,” said Rev. Travis Meier, Pastor of First Lutheran Church in Nashville. “This legislation represents a direct assault on our fundamental right to practice our faith by caring for our neighbors in need, regardless of their immigration status, race, or economic circumstances.”
