Mayor’s program could greatly benefit neighborhoods in Southeast Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — When Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell announced a program to identify and assist areas of Nashville that are considered “food deserts,” Metro Councilwoman Terry Vo knew immediately her district was a prime candidate.

Several pocket neighborhoods in her district, including Wedgewood Houston, Sudekum, Napier and Chestnut Hill, are without access to a proper grocery store, preventing residents access to fresh fruits and vegetables, pantry staples, or even cleaning supplies.

“I would say over half of my district does not have access to a grocery store that’s adequate,” Vo told News 2, noting many of her constituents take hour-plus long bus rides to get to the nearest grocery store.
