(NewsNation) — A Tennessee man with a pacemaker was put to death Tuesday despite concerns that his pacemaker could keep him alive.
Byron Black was on death row for 35 years for the shooting death of his girlfriend, Angela Clay, as well as her 6- and 9-year-old daughters, Latoya and Lakeisha.
While he was in prison, Black’s lawyers fought his execution on many grounds— most recently, the defibrillator implanted in his chest. Black’s heart would sometimes race out of control, and the implant would shock it back into normal rhythm.

Observers said that during the execution, Black seemed to be in obvious pain. But Dr. Jonathan Groner, a pediatric trauma surgeon, told “Banfield” he’s not sure if the extra pain was caused by the defibrillator or by the injection itself…
