The incident happened in the 2000 block of Old Murfreesboro Pike around 8:15 a.m. According to the MNPD, an officer was attempting to stop a vehicle suspected in a hit-and-run crash when the suspect got out and ran toward Una Elementary School.
The female officer, later identified as three-year MNPD veteran Bailee Mathers, was working as school security at the school when parents notified her about the crash nearby. Mathers reportedly intercepted the suspect — later identified as 35-year-old Tafari McIntosh — and he became combative and hit her, according to Metro police.
Nearby good Samaritans rushed to help and Mathers was able to restrain and handcuff McIntosh. Both were taken to the hospital for treatment and later released.
