Ms. Cheap: Thrift shops don’t want items they cannot sell

We all know it is a good thing to donate excess items from our homes and businesses to thrift stores for them to sell to make money for their missions.

But when you donate items that the non-profit shops cannot sell, your good intentioned efforts may be more trouble than they are worth because the nonprofits have to dispose of unsellable items, sometimes at a burdensome cost.

“A lot of people bring things because they don’t want to throw away themselves,” said Jennifer Weedman, a volunteer at This ‘N That Thrift shop in the Nations. She said her “bric-a-brac” sorting team has received everything from cake pans with cake stuck to the bottom to coffee pots with coffee grounds still in them, to “adult toys”, a garbage bag full of wet clothes and even a “used Q-tip”…
