NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Surgeons at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) were the first in the country to use brand-new technology during a surgery that they are hoping will soon be at the forefront of cancer treatment.
A spokesperson for the university said the Department of Otolaryngology’s Dr. Michael Topf “performed the country’s first surgery using intraoperative PET-CT scanning technology” while removing a tumor last month.
“This technique is in its early stages, but the doctors are hoping to demonstrate proof of concept that this is a technique that can become standard practice in the future,” a VUMC spokesperson said in an email Thursday.
