‘Like a time bomb’: Internal memo, former controller raise alarms about BNA Air Traffic Control staffing

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – A former air traffic controller for Nashville International Airport’s air traffic control tower is raising alarms about dangerous staffing shortages in the tower as passenger traffic has more than doubled since 2015.

Garld Graves Jr., who served over 20 years in military air traffic control before joining Nashville’s tower in 2019, said chronic understaffing has created unsafe working conditions that could lead to disaster.

“It’s like a time bomb,” Graves said. “Nobody wants it to happen, but the fear every day going in there is that today could be the day.”…
