Nashville icon Billy Lynch dies after 45 years of public service

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) – John William “Billy” Lynch, a dedicated public servant for Metro Nashville Government, has passed away at 79 after a brief illness.

Lynch’s career spanned 45 years, serving six Nashville mayors and leaving a lasting impact on the city. He was instrumental in integrating sports in Tennessee during his time as a student-athlete at Father Ryan High School.

After the 2010 floods, Lynch and his staff at Public Works organized and directed the massive clean-up of the city in less than 30 days. Then-Mayor Karl Dean praised Lynch’s dedication, saying, “All Billy has ever wanted to do was serve the people of Nashville, and he has done so in a way that has made me and five mayors before me very proud.”

Lynch is survived by his wife, Donna, their children, and grandchildren. A visitation will be held on Sunday, Nov. 9, from 4:00-7:00 p.m., followed by a memorial Mass on Monday, Nov. 10, at 1:00 p.m. at Saint Henry Catholic Church in Nashville…
