‘Maybe you’re being watched.’ Safety top of mind for residents as police warn of burglars using woods for cover

BELLE MEADE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Police are searching across multiple counties for a South American Theft Group targeting homes in Belle Meade and Brentwood, with burglaries following the same concerning pattern officers have been investigating for several days.

The group sneaks through woods to the back of houses, targeting homes on Friday and Saturday nights when residents are out to dinner or running errands. Police said the thieves were first seen wearing masks in May and are now focusing their efforts on upscale Nashville-area neighborhoods.

Police identify vehicle of interest and timing patterns

The Brentwood Police Department arrested several individuals connected to the South American Theft Group in May 2025, but officers said the group continues to operate in the area.

Police have identified a dark-colored BMW X3, believed to be a 2022-2024 model, as a vehicle of interest after traffic cameras captured it repeatedly circling near one of the burglaries. The vehicle appears to be displaying a fake or altered license plate…
