Linked in grief, united in honor: Remembering flight nurse/paramedic Allan Williams

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WKRN) – First responders from across Middle Tennessee gathered Saturday to honor a flight nurse/paramedic who died after a Vanderbilt LifeFlight helicopter crashed in Wilson County last weekend.

On Saturday, Nov. 8, officials said LifeFlight One — based at the Sumner County EMS headquarters in Gallatin — went down in an unpopulated area along Cairo Bend Road, killing flight nurse/paramedic Allan Williams and severely injuring a critical care flight paramedic and pilot.

“We’ve had a tremendous outpouring of support from both the local community and nationally,” Dr. Stephan Russ, Vanderbilt LifeFlight executive medical director and associate professor of emergency medicine, said.

On Saturday, Nov. 15, thousands gathered to show support for Williams and his family. An honor walk was held as a LifeFlight ambulance and crew departed from Williamson Memorial Funeral Home in Franklin, proceeding to Rolling Hills Community Church. There was also an “in line of service” honor ceremony with a flyover, according to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
