Food scarcity grows in Nashville as families wait for SNAP benefits to return

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Food insecurity continues to rise across Nashville, and city leaders say the need has only intensified even after the federal government shutdown ended.

Councilmember Delishia Porterfield says many families are still waiting for their SNAP benefits to be reinstated — leaving smaller neighborhood nonprofits to absorb the surge.

Porterfield says the issue was growing long before the shutdown. She worked with Metro Social Services to add an extra $200,000 to the city budget for emergency food pop-ups, including $25,000 dedicated to The Branch of Nashville, a small nonprofit that serves families in southeast Davidson County…
