Former Nashville Human Relations Official Indicted for Misusing Over $62,000 in Public Funds

Mark Eatherly, former Deputy Executive Director of Nashville’s Metropolitan Human Relations Commission (MHRC), has been indicted after an investigation by the Tennessee Comptroller’s Office. The investigation began when Metro officials identified unusual financial activities and reimbursements managed by Eatherly. According to investigators, Eatherly used at least $62,463.48 in public funds for personal purposes. This included directing funds to organizations he was involved with, submitting ineligible reimbursement claims, and using Metro money for personal expenses such as cell phone bills, food delivery, and travel in the U.S. and Europe.

Investigators also reported that Eatherly transferred Metro funds through outside organizations. In addition, he approved payments totaling $196,500 to support the “Save the Morris” initiative, which aims to preserve the Morris Memorial Building in downtown Nashville. These payments were made without Metro Council approval, which is required by city procedures.

Eatherly resigned from MHRC effective July 3, 2025. On November 13, 2025, a Davidson County Grand Jury indicted him on charges of theft over $60,000, official misconduct, and money laundering.
