Nashville Metro Council considers bills to address housing shortage, affordability crisis

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Nashville Metro Council will vote tonight on two bills designed to address the city’s housing crisis, with a third measure on second reading.

A recent study showed residents need more than $100,000 annually to live comfortably in Nashville. Another study found 49% of young Nashvillians said they don’t think they can afford to stay in the city and may have to move.

New zoning districts proposed

One bill would create two new zoning districts: Residential Neighborhood and Residential Limited. These districts would allow more duplexes and townhomes to be built instead of large apartment complexes or tall single-family homes, transitioning neighborhood landscapes to match current appearances.
