Raul Malo, frontman and songwriter for the Mavericks, has died at age 60. Malo was born in Miami to Cuban parents. He was known for combining country, rock, Latin, and jazz styles in his music. Malo founded the Mavericks in 1989. He was recognized as a strong vocalist and songwriter.
Malo lived in Nashville, where he became part of the local music community. He often performed at the Ryman Auditorium. Recently, the Nashville community held a two-night tribute for him at the Ryman as he battled cancer.
