Strong wind gusts, isolated severe storms possible on Thursday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — On Thursday, the wind will become significant ahead of a strong cold front. With this increasing wind, some storms are expected with the possibility of a few turning severe.

The Storm Prediction Center has added Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky to a Marginal Risk (level 1/5) for severe storms. This will be mostly for Thursday afternoon through late evening.

The primary concern is wind gusts that could reach severe criteria (greater than 58 mph). At this time, hail and tornadoes are extremely low .

On Thursday, the day starts with a very low rain chance and gusty wind increasing. One round of rain and isolated storms approach at midday. The main round arriving Thursday late afternoon and evening from west to east. While the storms look intense, they are fueled by the strong wind gusts. We’ll discuss the gusts more below. The cold front swings through Thursday night into Friday morning.

As mentioned, the wind is the main concern. Wind gusts throughout the day will be over 20 mph, and some gusts approaching 60 mph when the thunderstorms arrive. You may want to secure loose belongings outdoors or move them inside.

After this cold front, temperatures drop on Friday. Temperatures that morning start in the 20s, and highs in the 40s with sunshine. The weekend turns around to milder air with highs near 60. Some rain again Saturday night into Sunday with another cold front…
