BLOUNT COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) – The Army Corps of Engineers in Nashville announced it will remove Peery’s Mill Dam on the Little River, citing the need to restore natural river function and help threatened or endangered aquatic species.
The decision comes after multiple injuries and deaths at the low-head dam, which safety advocates have called a “drowning machine.” The Army Corps of Engineers said four people died at Peery’s Mill Dam in the last two decades.
