Former Antioch High School assistant principal sues city, current principal over shooting response, behavior afterwards

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – A former assistant principal at Antioch High School is suing the city and the school’s principal, claiming she developed post-traumatic stress disorder after last year’s deadly school shooting.

Dr. Kelly Latham filed a lawsuit in Davidson County Chancery Court alleging that on the day of the Jan. 22 shooting, she ran toward the cafeteria where the shooting took place while Executive Principal Dr. Nekesha Burnette “ran away from the crisis.”

The lawsuit claims Latham was the first administrator on the scene, witnessed the shooter turn the gun on himself and was left to “take charge by organizing the evacuation and dismissal of students.”

Pattern of behavior alleged

The lawsuit alleges a similar situation occurred on May 8, 2024, when Burnette received an alert about a gun on campus during a meeting with assistant principals. According to the filing, Burnette “gasped at an alert on her phone” and handed it to Latham, who ran toward the scene with another assistant principal while Burnette remained in the conference room.
