REPORT: Stretch of Nashville interstate ranked among worst freight bottlenecks in the U.S.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A stretch of Nashville’s interstate was named among the top 10 worst bottlenecks for trucks in the U.S.

Every year, the American Transportation Research Institute compiles a list of the most congested freight bottlenecks in the U.S. using GPS data. For 2026, the nonprofit named the Interstate 24 and Interstate 40 split at Interstate 440 East the seventh worst in the U.S.

“It points to, particularly around the Nashville area, tremendous population growth,” Rebecca Brewster, President and COO of ATRI told News 2. “With that population growth, you’ve seen the demand for everything that comes on trucks.”

ATRI said they put out the list because the cost of transporting goods is driven up by bottlenecks, and they want to give stakeholders a better understanding of how delays and congestion affect the country’s transportation system. According to ATRI, traffic congestion costs the trucking industry about $109 billion each year…
