There’s a shroud of forgetfulness that has engulfed Fort Negley since the Civil War.
That’s how Davidson County Historian Learotha Williams sees it. The fort, built in 1862 largely on the backs of several thousand conscripted and formerly enslaved Black laborers, is a part of Nashville’s history that Williams said has been marginalized, misrepresented and often ignored.
