NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A 63-year-old man died following a fire at an encampment in South Nashville Wednesday morning.
At approximately 3 a.m., the Nashville Fire Department responded to an encampment in a wooded area near Grandview Avenue and Melrose Avenue after others who live at the site reported waking up to find a neighbor’s tent on fire.
Crews extinguished the fire and found a deceased man inside the tent. He was identified as Darryl Smith, 63, who used a wheelchair.
Following an investigation by NFD arson investigators and Metro detectives, officials said the fire appeared to be accidental. The Metro Nashville Police Department told News 2 two other residents of the encampment had helped Smith set up a fire to keep warm before returning to their tent.
