Taxed by tariffs and tunneling thieves, New Orleans ‘hybrid hotel’ near Plaza Tower set to open

After overcoming financing issues, soaring construction costs and an copper thefts by tunneling burglars, the owners of the former Archdiocese of New Orleans administration building in downtown New Orleans are set to re-open the 12-story office tower as a new hotel.

Lafayette developers Sam Mohd and Rohan Dawra said this week they’ll soon begin taking reservations for Vcay Suites, which is geared towards travelers seeking multi-bedroom units for group trips, pending final city inspections and permitting expected next month.

The opening will mark the return to commerce of one of the most prominent former church properties liquidated during its bankruptcy proceedings, part of a plan to pay for its $304 million settlement with clergy sex abuse survivors.

And it illustrates the emerging trend of so-called hybrid hotels, which compete with whole-home short-term rentals to accommodate larger groups of visitors or business travelers who would prefer not to have to rent several hotel rooms while traveling together…
