A New Orleans-based ID verification company and agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s local field office are investigating how millions of Americans’ identification documents ended up for sale on the dark web, officials said.
Federal agents and cybersecurity experts learned of the massive breach after scans of some 150 million U.S. and Canadian driver’s licenses, medical identification documents and travel IDs surfaced on the Russian dark web forum Exploit, according to cybersecurity news website KrebsOnSecurity, which first reported the matter.
