After long wait, a Jefferson Parish school destroyed by Hurricane Ida is set to be rebuilt

After a yearslong wait, students in Jean Lafitte are one step closer to getting their school back.

Nearly five years to the day after Hurricane Ida destroyed the small town’s only school for grades 6-12, the Jefferson Parish school board during a meeting Wednesday approved a $68 million contract with local architecture firm Verges Rome Architects to rebuild Lafitte’s Fisher Middle-High School.

If construction goes according to schedule, the new campus is slated to open in fall 2028…
