On the subject of the New Orleans sanitation fee increase, I was surprised that the administration and the City Council just raised the fee to cover the sanitation deficit.
There was no effort to reduce costs or reduce the scope of the contract by getting rid of the recycling contract, from which the city receives absolutely no funds from selling the material to a recycler. Instead, the contractors keep the money.
Each time a garbage truck passes my house, it costs me $8.06 under the new rate. The mindset of the Moreno administration and the City Council needs to change from a tax-and-spend attitude to asking how we can reduce the financial impact on the homeowners of New Orleans…
