NEW ORLEANS, LA — Two university students in New Orleans helped turn a simple frustration about bottles heading to landfills into a project with a measurable environmental payoff. Their effort has recycled more than 12 million pounds of glass and converted it into sand that can be used in coastal restoration work.
That material is now being put to work in Louisiana’s eroding wetlands, where marshes have been steadily shrinking. The recycled sand is also helping marsh plants return, giving the project both a practical and ecological impact far beyond waste reduction alone.
The work stands out because it connects everyday recycling with one of the state’s most visible land-loss challenges. Instead of treating glass as a disposable byproduct, the project has found a use for it in rebuilding fragile shoreline habitat.
