New restaurant, lounge plans to open in Maypop space as downtown NOLA corridor sees more changes

More than a year after the Maypop closed in the Central Business District, a new restaurant is preparing to open in its place, joining the growing slate of restaurants and bars reshaping downtown New Orleans.

Velvet & Vine will take over the building on O’Keefe Avenue that formerly housed the upscale New Orleans restaurant that was a sibling to MoPho in Mid-City, which also closed.

As of Sunday, a notice for an alcoholic beverage permit application for Velvet & Vine was displayed on the window of the restaurant on the first floor of the Paramount at South Market building. The business also has an Instagram account with more than 1,000 followers, though it has yet to make a post.
