NOPD proposes cuts to body cameras, civilian jobs and crash response in 2027 budget

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) proposed cuts which could impact where officers go, what they do and what tools they’ll have available.

Supt. Anne Kirkpatrick presented the NOPD’s proposed 2027 budget to the New Orleans City Council Tuesday (Sept. 30) as the Moreno administration grapples with a financial crisis.

The presentation laid out the following cuts:

  • $2 million in overtime
  • $4.3 million in NOPD civilian staffing positions (enough for 63 full-time positions)
  • $2.5 million cut to AXON contract (which includes body cameras, in car cameras and tasers)
  • $1.3 million elimination of On Scene Services (civilian response to some traffic crashes)
  • $452,000 in other operational cuts

Kirkpatrick emphasized the proposed cuts are “not done deals.”…
