Will Sutton: Battle over who’s in charge of New Orleans will have long-term repercussions

In the red corner are Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry and Attorney General Liz Murrill. In the blue corner are New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno, District Attorney Jason Williams and most of the New Orleans City Council.

In this figurative boxing ring, a couple of boxers in each corner have already been bobbing and weaving, throwing punches since a loud bell started ringing. These boxers may not have thought about drafting anything, but that’s what they’re doing.

Our country’s forefathers decided that what they had developed in the colonies should be more than a loose group of somewhat like-minded governing bodies working together so they came together to form a nation. At a Constitutional Convention, they shared, debated and discussed ideas. Several drafts of what might be parts of the new constitution emerged. From there, the convention produced a rough draft, then a final, more polished draft…
