New Orleans is likely to see school closures. Alumni, parents are preparing to fight back.

Brandon McIntyre stood in line behind dozens of other alumni in L. B. Landry High School’s crowded auditorium, waiting for his turn at the microphone to speak out for his school’s survival – again.

The Algiers high school was last threatened with closure after Hurricane Katrina, when state officials debated whether to reopen badly damaged, and previously struggling, schools like Landry. Now, due to low enrollment at Landry and across the New Orleans public school system, fears of closure have returned.

After Algiers Charter Schools said they would stop running the school at the end of the school year, raising the prospect of closure, McIntyre and hundreds of alumni gathered at Landry Monday evening. They told district officials at the previously scheduled meeting about the charter school renewal process that closing Landry would devastate the community…
