Mayor Helena Moreno’s administration could save more than $1 million a year by firing contractors that handle illegal dumping and doing that work itself, the New Orleans Inspector General said.
Inspector General Ed Michel, whose office roots out waste, fraud and abuse in city government, said Wednesday in a public letter that that the city could save $13.1 million over 10 years if the Department of Sanitation handled waste-management cleanups without paying private contractors.
