NOPD: Teen tried to run over cops; officer fired gun to stop him

A stolen car investigation turned into an officer-involved shooting, New Orleans Police Department officials say. That shooting now has the NOPD Public Integrity Bureau investigating that incident.

It happened just after midnight Thursday morning near the corner of College Court and Earhart Boulevard.

Police say officers on patrol found the stolen car near that location. According to investigators, the officer noticed a teen with a gun in his waistband sleeping inside that car. Investigators say the suspect woke up after the officers tried several times to rouse him. Once awake, the teen allegedly tried to speed away in the car, nearly hitting the officers in the process.

Investigators say one of the officers shot at the teen in an attempt to stop him from speeding towards him. The suspect wasn’t hit. Police say they arrested the teen at the scene.

The teen was taken to a local hospital for injuries he suffered during the incident. He’s facing three counts of aggravated assault of a peace officer with a motor vehicle and one count each of resisting and juvenile in possession of a firearm.
