Blazing down the streets of New Orleans, lighting up the faces of parade-goers with bright orange flames, the flambeaux are one of Carnival’s oldest traditions. The large metal trays lit with fire are seen at the beginning of night parades in the city, as strong men carry them while performing and dancing for Mardi Gras onlookers. But how did the seemingly dangerous tradition start?
