Growing up in 1980s Algiers, Michael Willis remembers the violence he encountered as a New Orleans youth. He had a classmate fall victim to a bullet inside the then Perry Walker High School, from which he graduated. And he fought his own demons at home, as his mother, first pregnant at 15, suffered with a crack cocaine addiction throughout his childhood.
