Newell: All juvenile criminal records should be open for the sake of safety

Lax law enforcement on petty crimes leads to nothing but bigger crimes, according to WWL’s Newell Normand, who said on his show that there needs to be more transparency about juvenile justice.

“I think it’s time for shock and awe, open up all of the juvenile records, all of it,” Normand said.

There are judges putting criminals back out on the street without ankle monitors “and they’re right back in your neighborhood and they’re hanging out with your kids again,” he added.

Parents these days are relying on the system to tell them who’s safe around their kids and for that reason “the system needs to be opened up,” Newell said.

He was responding to the case of Kai Jefferson, 16, who was recaptured last week after escaping detention.

The New Orleans Police Department said Jefferson was wanted on multiple counts, after he threatened someone with a gun multiple times in December 2023. Jefferson escaped the Bridge City Center for Youth in March 2023 and was found in Georgia by U.S. Marshals.
