When students act out in class, some people might see bad behavior. But Allisyn Swift sees something different: a response to trauma. Swift is the executive director of the Coalition for Compassionate Schools, which trains educators on how to work with students who have experienced trauma. Louisiana has the third highest rate of children who have experienced multiple traumatic life events, according to data from the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Such experiences can trigger responses to stress that, in the classroom, come out as disruptive behavior.
