WASHINGTON – The intense federal security presence that will descend on New Orleans for the Super Bowl next month will return just weeks later to help local police with Mardi Gras.
The man in charge of that security — a Louisiana native — says the goal is to ensure safety after this month’s terrorist attack on Bourbon Street without disrupting a beloved tradition.
“I’m a Louisiana kid and I understand the historical significance of these krewes,” said Eric DeLaune, New Orleans special agent in charge Homeland Security Investigations. “I have a great respect for the traditions and I know how important Mardi Gras is.”
DeLaune, who grew up in Morgan City, is currently serving as the lead federal coordinator for Super Bowl LIX security. He was assigned last week to serve as the federal coordinator for this year’s Mardi Gras festivities in New Orleans…
