New Orleans assessor throws support behind homestead exemption bill

Orleans Parish Assessor Erroll Williams has rallied behind a bill that seeks to lower the amount of annual property taxes Louisiana homeowners pay each year.

House Bill 271, filed by Rep. Matthew Willard D-New Orleans, calls for raising the state’s homestead exemption from $75,000 to $125,000 of a home’s market value, a move aimed at bringing relief to property owners grappling with soaring insurance costs and higher property taxes.

Williams, who is up for reelection this fall, said the exemption has remained unchanged since 1980, when the average home price in the state was $43,000. He said increasing it “just makes sense.”…
