Slidell woman who smuggled fentanyl into jail gets 40 years for manslaughter after inmate overdose

COVINGTON, La. (WVUE) – A Slidell woman who smuggled fentanyl into the Slidell jail in 2023, providing a fatal overdose to a fellow inmate, received a maximum 40-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

Judge Alan Black imposed the sentence April 21 upon 40-year-old Sarah Blackmon, who admitted responsibility for the death of 25-year-old cellmate Theresa Zar, who was found dead on Nov. 22, 2023.

Under Louisiana law, if a person distributes a controlled dangerous substance that is the direct cause of death of the recipient who ingested it, that person is criminally liable for homicide.
