Families displaced after two-alarm fire at New Orleans East apartment complex

NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — Several families are displaced following a fire at a New Orleans East apartment complex.

Firefighters with the New Orleans Fire Department were alerted around 6:29 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29, of a fire in the 4500 block of Papania Street. Once learning it was an apartment complex, a second alarm was called at 6:37 a.m.

NOFD officials said they simultaneously assessed the fire while working to extinguish the flames and evacuate the building.

Firefighters were told that the fire began around the stove in a second story apartment and extended to two apartments on the right and through the common attic space.

In total, 17 NOFD units carrying 50 personnel were able to get the fire under control by 7:04 a.m.
