Orleans Parish voters approve tax renewal for the Sheriff’s Office

NEW ORLEANS — In a crucial decision for the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, voters on May 3 approved the renewal of a tax that will continue to fund essential operations for the next decade.

The 10-year millage renewal passed by just two votes.

The tax, which has been part of the sheriff’s operating budget for years, brings in about $13 million, covering 20% of OPSO’s budget. The funds are used for a variety of purposes, including jail staffing, maintenance, reentry programs, and mental health services…
