Veterans, advocates push back as VA ends mortgage assistance program

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Military veterans, including some in Louisiana, are voicing frustration over the end of a federal program that helped thousands who served their country avoid foreclosure.

“You know, you look at veterans today on some of these corners, it’s very sad to see a veteran on the corner with a sign in his hand. I’m a veteran, please help me. Anything you give me will help, that’s sad,” said retired Army Col. Clarence Becknell, Ed.D.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs recently ended the Veterans Affairs Servicing Purchase Program, or VASP, which helped thousands of veterans stay in their homes since its creation during the Biden administration…
