NEW ORLEANS — After the historic escape of ten inmates from Orleans Justice Center last Friday, Sheriff Susan Hutson was quick to point out that she’s been warning about the conditions at the jail for years.
The escapes gave the public a closer look at what’s going on inside jail walls, the most alarming of which is the startling lack of supervision. On the day of the jailbreak, 36 staff members were responsible for securing around 1,400 inmates.
“It gives us a better place to work and you are able to control the inmates a little bit better and meet their needs. You actually have deputies stationed on the pod,” said then-OPSO Deputy Nicole Harris in September 2015 when the new jail opened…
