West Nile detected, mosquito treatment expands in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans officials said treatment for mosquitoes will expand after West Nile virus was detected in some insects.

Officials first told us that West Nile had been detected on the East Bank on May 21. Since then, treatment has expanded to the French Quarter, City Park, Gentilly, Marigny, and the Lower 9th Ward.

On Wednesday spray abatements were conducted in those areas. According to officials, WNV cycles between wild birds and mosquitoes and can be transmitted to humans and animals by the bite of an infected mosquito, a release said…
